1. Introduce them to cake/frosting before their photos and let them explore with their hands.
Imagine someone setting a foreign object in front of you and proclaiming, “EAT! TAKE BITE!” Most babes pick cautiously at the frosting and don’t dive right into the goods unless they know what the heck they are eating; add a new and distracting location with people watching them sit in one spot and you may end up with an overstimulated babe! Avoid a sensory nightmare by letting them explore some cake at least a week or two before the session.

2. Be quiet and just observe!
Some kiddos love the attention and cooing as we encourage them to chow down, but remember to read your baby’s comfort level. If they’re getting overwhelmed, just step back and see what they do. Also this shouldn’t have to be said but please, for the love of cheese, PLEASE do not force your child’s hands of face into the cake…

3. Be prepared for the aftermath.
Oooo boy you better be bringing those water/milk bottles, a towel, and a billion packs of wipes because we are trying to get MESSY. They will be thirsty, dirty, maybe even cranky and exhausted, so you may want to bring another set of hands to help keep your clothing frosting-free.

4. Smash something else!
You don’t NEED to do a cake smash for this milestone. Opting for just a sweet portrait session, or even something like edible paints, spaghetti, donuts, ice cream, watermelon/fruits etc. These are your memories so do what you want!
Ready and excited for your babe to reach that one year milestone? Book your cake smash session in advance so there is plenty of time to plan and prepare!
I would love to take that step with you.
